Union Cabinet approves the High Courts (Alteration of Names) Bill, 2016
The Union Cabinet has given its approval to The High Courts (Alteration of Names) Bill, 2016 to change names of the High Courts based on the nomenclature cities they are located.
The Bill facilitates changing of the names of ‘Madras High Court as Chennai High Court’ and ‘Bombay High Court as Mumbai High Court’ respectively.
After the enactment of this act, the High Courts of Bombay and Madras will named after the names of the cities in which they were located.
Background
- The proposed Bill in consequence to the change in the names of these High Courts was prepared to fulfil demands of the respective State Government and the people.
- There was demand to change the colonial names of these High Courts as the colonial names of the cities in which they are located also have been changed.
- At present, there is no Union Law under which the proposal for change of names of these High Courts can be addressed. This Bill has addressed this requirement.
