Union Cabinet approves AYUSH Health and Wellness Centres

On March 21, 2020, the Union Cabinet approved Ayush Health and Wellness Centre under Ayushman Bharat Mission

Highlights

Under the approval, an expenditure of Rs 3,395 crores have been allocated. The centres are to be constructed within a time span of five years. On the whole, GoI has planned to operationalise 12,500 centres.

Benefits

The centres will help achieve Universal Health Coverage. It will reduce the burden on secondary and tertiary health care facilities. The centres will also help in reducing out of pocket expenditure as it will operate on “self-care” model. It also aims to integrate with SDG 3 as that advised by NITI Aayog.

Background

In 2018, the GoI announced that around 1.5 lakh Health and Wellness Centres are to be created under Ayushman Bharat scheme. It aims to create a holistic wellness model based on AYUSH principles.

The scheme is being implemented by the National Health Authority operating under Ministry of Health and Farmer Welfare.
