UNESCO names Conakry as World Book Capital for 2017
United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) has named Conakry, the Capital city of the Republic of Guinea as the World Book Capital for year 2017.
With this selection Conakry become the 17th city in the World to be designated as World Book Capital. At present, Incheon city of South Korea is World Book Capital for year 2015.
About World Book Capital
- It is a designation bestowed by UNESCO to a particular city every year since 2001.
- Seeks to promote books and reading and the dedication of all players in the book industry.
- The designation runs for 1 year starting from UNESCO’s World Book and Copyright Day (April 23) till April 22 of the following year.
- Madrid, capital of Spain in 2001 was the first city to be recognised as World Book Capital.
- In case of India, New Delhi was recognised as World Book Capital in 2003.
- Wrocław city of Poland has been chosen as World Book Capital for year 2016.
