UNDP- Panchayati Raj Ministry MoU
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR) have signed an agreement with the aim of collaborating in the areas of knowledge sharing and strengthening the mechanism to monitor the localization of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Overview:
- This agreement was signed by Sunil Kumar, Secretary in the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, and Shoko Noda, UNDP resident representative.
- Around 65 per cent of the population of the country lives in rural areas. Hence, the Centre is continuously increasing funding of social sector schemes to uplift these areas in various sectors like housing, sanitation, solid waste management, etc. with the help of various rural local bodies.
Importance of Panchayati Raj Institutions
The Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) have been an important component across rural India as it plays a part in local self-governance. The PRIs have helped contribute toward the country’s last-mile connectivity and have also helped in executing various schemes of different government ministries as well as departments. The sustainable development goals can also be achieved if the PRIs are actively involved.
About the agreement
Through this agreement, both organizations will be looking to strengthen SDG monitoring at the grassroots level. This partnership will help to keep the local priorities at the top of the planning and implementing programmes. The MoPR and the UNDP will be collaborating in the fields of capacity building, knowledge sharing, and strengthening of the monitoring mechanisms.
