UN says threat of a hacking attack on Nuclear Plants is growing

The UN has warned that vicious non-state groups who seek weapons of mass destruction are capable of creating a mass disruption using cyber technologies and launch a hacking attack on a nuclear power plant’s computer system which will result in the uncontrolled release of radiation. In the Security Council meeting, the focus was on ways to prevent the proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons by extremist groups and criminals. A resolution was adopted at the meeting to strengthen the work of the council committee monitoring the measures the countries adopt to prevent non-state actors from acquiring weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). UN has said that there exist legitimate concerns about the security and safety of radioactive material suitable that are outside international regulation. It has added that the emerging technologies like 3D printing and unmanned aerial vehicles are likely to act as threats and need for the robust defences to stay ahead of this technological curve. The new resolution recognises the need for the UN member states international groups and regional organisations to increase information sharing on these threats and risks.
