UN Champions of the Earth 2024 Announced

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recently honoured six individuals and initiatives as Champions of the Earth for 2024, marking their contributions to environmental protection and sustainability.

Madhav Gadgil’s Recognition

Madhav Gadgil, an esteemed ecologist from India, received the Lifetime Achievement Award. His work focuses on protecting biodiversity, particularly in the Western Ghats. Gadgil has influenced public opinion and government policies through extensive research and community engagement.

Sonia Guajajara’s Leadership

Sonia Guajajara, Brazil’s Minister of Indigenous Peoples, was awarded in the Policy Leadership category. She has advocated for Indigenous rights for over two decades. Guajajara’s efforts have resulted in the declaration of ten Indigenous territories to combat deforestation and illegal activities.

Amy Bowers Cordalis’ Advocacy

Amy Bowers Cordalis received the Inspiration and Action award. She is known for her work on the Klamath River restoration. Cordalis played important role in the removal of dams, allowing salmon to return to their natural habitats.

Gabriel Paun’s Environmental Activism

Gabriel Paun, a Romanian activist, also won in the Inspiration and Action category. He founded Agent Green to combat deforestation in the Carpathian Mountains. Paun has successfully preserved areas of old-growth forests despite facing threats.

Lu Qi’s Scientific Contributions

Lu Qi, a Chinese scientist, was honoured in the Science and Innovation category. He has worked against desertification for over 30 years. As Chief Scientist at the Chinese Academy of Forestry, he contributed to the Great Green Wall project, enhancing afforestation efforts.

SEKEM’s Sustainable Farming

SEKEM, an Egyptian initiative, received the Entrepreneurial Vision award. It promotes sustainable farming through biodynamic agriculture. SEKEM has transformed arid lands into productive agricultural areas, encouraging sustainable development in Egypt.

The Champions of the Earth award is UNEP’s highest environmental honour. It celebrates exceptional contributions to environmental protection. Since 2005, 122 individuals and organisations have been recognised for their efforts.
