Ukraine crisis 2014: Russia suspended from G-8 Countries Club over its incursion into Crimea
The Group of Eight countries have suspended Russia from elite club of world powers amid heightened tensions over Ukraine and Russia’s incursion into Crimea.
- Despite this suspension of Russia from G8 Nations list, the US and European Union also announced new sanctions against Moscow over its actions in the CrimeanPeninsula.
- The Group of Seven nations (world’s leading industrial democracies) suspended preparations for a G-8 summit that Russia is scheduled to host in June in Sochi.
Note: Despite strong international objections, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a draft bill for the annexation of Crimea, one of a flurry of steps to formally take over the Black Sea peninsula.
