UK Launches Defence Partnership–India (DP-I)
On February 10, 2025, the United Kingdom officially launched the Defence Partnership–India (DP-I). This initiative aims to deepen defence collaboration between the UK and India. The announcement coincided with the Aero India event, where several key agreements were signed. These agreements focus on advanced defence technologies and manufacturing capabilities.
Defence Partnership–India (DP-I)
- The DP-I is a dedicated cell within the UK’s Ministry of Defence.
- It acts as a one-stop shop for enhancing bilateral defence cooperation.
- The initiative is intended to strengthen ties and streamline processes related to defence procurement and technology exchange.
Key Agreements and Contracts
- Several contracts were signed during Aero India.
- Thales UK and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) agreed to deliver Laser Beam Riding Man-Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPADS).
- The initial supply includes STARStreak high-velocity missiles.
- Additionally, there is a plan to produce Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMMs) through this collaboration.
Advanced Missile Systems
A notable development is the establishment of an Advanced Short-Range Air to Air Missile (ASRAAM) assembly and test facility in Hyderabad. This facility will manufacture missiles for the Jaguar and Light Combat Aircraft-Mk1A. The agreement aims to enhance India’s indigenous defence capabilities and support exports.
Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP) System
A Statement of Intent was signed to design and develop an Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP) system for India’s next-generation Landing Platform Dock (LPD) fleet. This development is crucial for modernising India’s naval capabilities and enhancing operational efficiency.
Maritime Testing Facility
General Electric Vernova and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) are collaborating to create India’s first maritime Land-Based Testing Facility. This facility is expected to facilitate the delivery of LPDs by 2030, further advancing India’s maritime defence infrastructure.
Strategic Implications
The DP-I and associated agreements represent a strategic shift in defence collaboration between India and the UK. These initiatives aim to address mutual security concerns and enhance interoperability between the two nations’ armed forces. The partnerships are expected to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in both countries.
India’s Defence Self-Reliance
The UK’s commitment to support India’s defence ambitions aligns with India’s goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliance in defence. The British High Commissioner brought into light the importance of collaboration in defence technologies as a means to achieve this objective.
