UK-India Partnership in Nuclear Energy and Innovation
During the visit of Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, to India, the two countries have signed two government-to-government Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) on Global Innovation Partnership and Nuclear Energy Partnership.
Overview:
- The MoU on the Cooperation on Global Centre for Nuclear Energy Partnership (GCNEP) was signed between the Department of Atomic Energy of India and the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy of the UK.
- Both countries have reaffirmed their desire to strengthen partnerships on civil nuclear cooperation.
- Another MoU was also signed on the Implementation of Global Innovation Partnership between the Ministry of External Affairs of India and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
Aim of the GCNEP
This collaboration has been signed with the aim of jointly promoting training and research on radioactive applications, nuclear energy studies, nuclear safety, and security.
About Global Innovation Partnership
It is a cooperation and development initiative that will be co-financed by India and the UK for up to USD 100 million with the aim of transferring and scaling innovations to the third-world countries that will help in delivering climate-related and Sustainable Development Goals. Also, through this partnership, Indian innovations will be showcased globally.
Visit of Prime Minster Johnson
On 21st April 2022, the Prime Minister of the UK, Boris Johnson arrived in India for a two-day visit, that included engagements and visits in Gujarat followed by a visit to New Delhi to hold bilateral talks with PM Modi.
