Uber Shikara: India’s First Water Transport Service

Uber has introduced Asia’s first water transport service, Uber Shikara, in Dal Lake, Jammu and Kashmir, which blends technology with traditional shikara rides to enhance the tourist experience. Tourists can now book shikara rides through the Uber app that allows advance bookings from 12 hours to 15 days ahead, which aims to streamline the tourist experience.

Launch Details

The service was launched by Prabhjeet Singh, Uber India and South Asia President. He booked the inaugural ride via the app. Singh emphasised the blend of technology and tradition at the launch event.

Local Partnerships

Uber Shikara currently collaborates with seven local shikara operators. The company plans to expand this number based on demand. The shikaras are stationed at Nehru Park, a picturesque location on Dal Lake.

Pricing Structure and Timings

Uber adheres to government-regulated pricing for shikara rides. The service does not charge additional fees to shikara operators. This approach ensures that operators retain the full fare from customers.

Each Uber Shikara can accommodate up to four passengers. The service operates daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This schedule allows for flexibility in planning rides.

Cultural Significance

Uber Shikara aims to highlight the cultural richness of Kashmir. Ruchika Tomar, Uber’s Director of Communications, emphasised the importance of shikara rides for visitors. The service seeks to offer a memorable experience that reflects local charm.

Uber intends to grow the fleet of shikaras over time. The expansion will depend on customer feedback and demand levels. Local operators express optimism about increased tourism and stable income from this partnership.

Uber has launched similar water transport services in other cities, such as Venice, Italy. Uber Shikara is part of a broader goal to connect with local cultures.
