UAE Launches New Generative AI Open-Source Foundation

The advanced Technology Innovation Institute (TII) of the United Arab Emirates has launched the Falcon Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing open-source generative AI models.
Backed by $300 million funding from TII, its objective is to progress development of open-source Generative AI models through collaborative initiatives.

The Falcon Foundation will leverage TII’s homegrown Falcon AI models, creating an open ecosystem for stakeholders, developers, academics, and industry players to contribute and benefit.

The Foundation supports customizing Falcon models for specific sectors and provides open computing resources for ongoing research and development. This ensures the models’ adaptability across diverse applications and contexts.

Understanding Generative AI

Generative AI refers to a category of artificial intelligence that can create new content like text, images, video or audio from scratch based on identifying patterns in training data rather than simply categorizing information.

Real World Applications

Prominent examples of generative algorithms are chatbots, AI image/video generators, music composers etc. They have wide applicability across sectors like marketing, healthcare, education, finance and entertainment.

Significance of Open Source

Having open-source Generative AI prevents domination by big tech giants through their proprietary black-box models. Open ecosystems allow continuous enhancements through shared developer communities.

Falcon AI Models as Starting Point

The Falcon Foundation would commence activities by bringing stakeholders together around TII’s own advanced Falcon AI models designed using minimal data targeting multifaceted real-life utilities.

Why Falcon Models Show Promise

TII asserts Falcon models have shown capability to rapidly grasp complex learning tasks such as identifying diseases, suggesting treatment plans, intelligently responding to questions etc.

Focus Areas of Foundation

Democratizing Generative AI Access

By subsidizing costs and computational resources related to accessing Falcon AI models, the Foundation seeks to make the benefits more inclusive beyond just large corporations.

Supporting Startups & Research

It would provide developmental support to startups building new innovations around Falcon while also funding research projects by academia into responsible AI which aligns these autonomous systems to ethical standards.

Building Collaborative Frameworks

The Falcon Foundation aims to construct collaborative frameworks for continuous training, testing and enhancement of open-source Generative models through inputs from contributing developers and partners.

The initiative, spearheaded by Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council, aims to democratize AI development and accelerate technological progress through open collaboration.

The launch of the Falcon Foundation took place at the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024 and marks a critical juncture in convening stakeholder collaboration to establish transparent governance models and encourage knowledge exchange.
