UAE Advances in Human Rights Milestones: UAHR
The Union Association for Human Rights (UAHR) commended the UAE for its advancements in human rights. These developments align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which focus areas include health, education, social protection, and cultural rights.
Recent Achievements
The UAE has made notable strides in human rights legislation. On Human Rights Day, the UAHR acknowledged these efforts. The country has established laws that empower women and protect children, the elderly, and workers.
Legislative Progress
Over the past five years, approximately 55 new laws have been introduced, to tackle domestic violence, discrimination, and extremism. They also include protections for witnesses and juvenile offenders. Efforts against human trafficking have been strengthened as well.
The UAE’s legal framework now covers various areas, which regulates places of worship for non-Muslims and media operations. Labour relations and senior citizens’ rights are also addressed. Additionally, personal data protection laws have been implemented.
National Strategies and Policies
Nearly 40 national strategies have been launched. Key initiatives include the National Policy for the Empowerment of Emirati Women (2023-2031) and the UAE Gender Balance Council Strategy. Other strategies focus on food security and artificial intelligence.
Global Recognition
The UAE has gained international recognition for its human rights efforts. It ranks seventh globally and first regionally in the 2024 Gender Inequality Index. The country also leads the world in the Lack of Labour Disputes Index.
The UAE has ratified several international treaties, endorsed the Convention against Torture in 2012. The country has also joined nine key International Labour Organisation conventions, including the Equal Remuneration Convention.
