U.S. to supply arms to Syria rebels

For the first time the U.S. has openly promised the Syrian rebels to supply weapons as it claims to have found evidence the Syrian regime using chemical weapons. The decision has got support from Britain and France which had already said that the Syrian government had resorted to use of its chemical weapons stockpiles. However, Damascus has rejected use of any such weapons.
The neutral countries such as Sweden, which warned of the risks of an arms race between the rival foreign supporters of the regime and the rebels, have expressed concern.
The U.S. military proposals also include a limited no-fly zone over rebel training camps that could stretch up to 40 km into Syria from neighboring Jordan. But France said such a plan would not be viable without U.N. authorization, which would not be forthcoming given Russia’s strong opposition.
