Chelonoidis phantasticus
Fernandina Island Galápagos tortoise (Chelonoidis phantasticus) is a species of Galapagos tortoise found at the Fernandina Island – the third largest island of Equator’s Galapagos Islands. It came to be known only through one male specimen that was found and killed by the members of an expedition in 1906. It was thought to have become extinct until a single female was discovered in 2019.
In May 2021, researchers have conducted gene testing to confirm the 2019 sighting. They confirmed the re-discovery by comparing the results of the newly conducted genetic studies with the DNA that was extracted from the male specimen found in 1906.
