DRDO: Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully carried out the maiden flight of an unmanned combat aircraft, called Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator. The aircraft was tested in Chitradurga, Karnataka.
About Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator
- It was maiden flight of the Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator.
- The aircraft operated in a fully autonomous mode and also performed a perfect flight, including its take-off, way point navigation as well as a smooth touchdown.
- It has been termed a significant step towards our self-reliance in strategic defence technologies and critical military system.
- The vehicle is powered by a small turbofan engine.
- Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator is being called as a precursor to an autonomous stealthy UCAV (unmanned combat aerial vehicle), being developed by the DRDO.
Who has developed the Demonstrator?
The Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator has been designed and developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) of DRDO.
About ADE
Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) is an Aeronautical Systems Design House which designs and develops the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Aeronautical Systems and technologies to meet the requirements of the Indian Armed forces. Major R&D activities are in the areas of-Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Air Weapons, Flight simulators, Flight control systems and Pilotless target aircraft
DRDO
It was established in 1958 with a mission to design, develop and lead to production state-of-the-art sensors, weapon systems, platforms and allied equipment for our Defence Services. Dr G Satheesh Reddy is currently the chairman of DRDO.
Unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV)
UCAV is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which is used for intelligence, target acquisition, surveillance, and reconnaissance. It carries aircraft ordnance like ATGMs, missiles, and/or bombs for drone strikes. These drones usually take its operation, under real-time human control.
