Banni grassland

Banni grassland in Gujarat spans across some 2,618 km and accounts for nearly 45 per cent of the state’s pastures. It forms a belt of arid grassland ecosystem on the outer southern edge of Rann of Kutch. It consists of 48 hamlets or villages with a population of around 40,000 under the control of 19 panchayats. In the past, it was managed using a system of rotational grazing. It became a reserve forest in 1995.
