Centre approves Rs 15,000 crore COVID-19 Emergency package for States/UTs

The Centre on April 9, 2020 approved the Rs 15,000 crore COVID-19 Emergency Response and Health System Preparedness package aimed at boosting national and state health systems to support procurement of essential medical equipment and drugs, and strengthening of surveillance activities. The 100% centrally funded package will be implemented in three phases from January 2020 to March 2024.

COVID-19: CSIR & NCL develop Digital IR Thermometer & oxygen enrichment unit

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune on April 9, 2020 announced two innovations — Digital IR Thermometer and oxygen enrichment unit — that can help in the mitigation of the coronavirus outbreak.

COVID 19: Arogya Setu Interactive Voice Response System service launched

Industrial output grew 4.5% in February 2020

The country’s industrial output grew by 4.5% in February, mainly on account of higher output in mining, manufacturing and electricity sector, government data showed on April 9, 2020. The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) had grown by 0.2% in February 2019.

India’s GDP growth in 2020-21 to decline to 4.8% due to COVID-19: UNESCAP

India’s GDP growth in 2020-21 is expected to slow down to 4.8% because of COVID-19 pandemic, the UN said in its ‘Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) 2020 report. India’s GDP growth for 2019-2020 was estimated at 5% and the forecast for 2021-22 is 5.1%.

A three-man crew docks at International Space Station

A three-man crew comprising Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner of Roscosmos and NASA’s Chris Cassidy docked successfully at the International Space Station on April 9, 2020. The Soyuz MS-16 capsule carrying them had blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome six hours ago.
