TN ‘Pudumai Penn’ Scholarship Scheme
The Scheme was launched by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin in 2022. The scheme will pay thousands of rupees to government school students. Beneficiaries of the scheme are students studying in Class V to Class XII. Only girl students are included in the scheme. Tamil Nadu Government allotted 698 crores of rupees for the scheme. More than six lakh girls are to benefit from the scheme.
Background
- Earlier, the Tamil Nadu Government was implementing a Marriage assistance scheme. This marriage assistance scheme has now been converted into higher education scheme
- The marriage assistance scheme is called Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Marriage Scheme. The newly launched higher education scheme is Moovalur Ramamitham Ammaiyar Higher Education Assurance Scheme. This scheme is being implemented under the name “Pudhumai Penn Scheme”.
Political Aspects
The scheme was launched in the presence of Delhi CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal. The DMK (Stalin’s party) is now ruling the state. They campaigned against BJP to come to power.
Who is Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar?
She lived between 1883 and 1962. She was a social activist and an active participant in the Dravidian Movement (the movement of which Stalin’s father Karunanidhi was a part). She fought against the Devadasi system in the state of Tamil Nadu.
