TN launches software to aid police investigations
Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MK Stalin, launched face recognition software on October 4, 2021 for assisting police officials in their investigation.

- “Face recognition software” will help the police personnel in comparing the photos of suspects with “data resource” that have been uploaded in Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS).
- On CCTNS website, more than 5.30 lakh photos of suspects were uploaded.
- This software will compare suspects, accused persons, missing persons, and unidentified corpses with the data uploaded on CCTNS website.
- Data related to accused or suspect will be shared between the stations on need basis.
- software will also help the police personnel in checking whether the accused person was a history sheeter or any warrant has been issued against him/her.
On which device the software will work?
This software can be installed in computers at the police stations as well as on smartphones of police personnel.
Will it recognise faces through CCTV footage?
According to the report, department has also planned to improve face recognition software in order to compare and identify faces through CCTV footage. This improvement will help in identifying people who were missing or being looked out for, using CCTV footage.
Crime and Criminal Tracking Networks and Systems (CCTNS)
CCTNS is a project by Indian government, launched to create a comprehensive and integrated system for effective policing through e-Governance. It comprises of a nationwide online tracking system, integrating about 14,000 police stations in India. National Crime Records Bureau is the nodal agency of implementing this project.
