The Crusades

The Crusades were a series of religious wars. According to the Latin church, these wars occurred in the medieval period. Of all the wars, the best-known crusades were the wars that were fought between 1095 and 1291. They were intended to recover Jerusalem from Islamic rule.

About crusades

The following wars are also referred to as the Crusades:

  • Military activities against the Moors in the Iberian Peninsula
  • The war against the pagan Slavic tribes in the northern Europe is also referred to as crusades
  • Crusades were also fought by the Christian sectors against the Ottoman empire and byzantine empire. These wars were fought to combat paganism. Paganism is generally considered as pre-christian religion
  • Reconquista: The crusade war fought in 1123 between Christian and Muslims in Iberian Peninsula
  • The campaigns in Northern Europe against the pagan tribes were also called the crusades

Terminology

Generally, crusades are referred to the military expeditions taken by the European Christian in the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries.

900-year-old Crusade sword

In October 2021, a 900-year-old crusade sword was discovered in the coasts of Israel. It most likely belonged to a knight who fell into the sea during the battle. Or maybe, he lost his sword in the battle.
