Thadou Tribe Rejects Kuki Label in 2024 Convention

The Thadou Convention took place in Guwahati. This event was for the Thadou tribe of Manipur. It addressed the ongoing issues surrounding their identity and the violence that has affected them since May 3, 2023. The Thadou tribe has faced challenges regarding their classification within the broader Kuki group, which they reject.

Thadou Identity

The Thadou tribe asserts that they are a distinct ethnic group. They have their language, culture, and history. The recent declaration made at the convention emphasised that the Thadou should not be classified as part of the Kuki group. The tribe insists on being recognised as an independent entity.

Historical Background

The Thadou have been recorded as a separate tribe since the first census in India in 1881. According to the 2011 census, their population was 215,913. The tribe’s history shows a consistent identity, distinct from others. They argue that their classification has been misrepresented over time.

Rejection of Kuki Classification

The Thadou Convention strongly rejected the term “Kuki.” They argue that this label was imposed during the colonial era and has no relevance to their identity. The Thadou claim that this term groups them with various tribes, which they believe dilutes their unique identity.

Impact of Violence

The convention brought to light the tragic violence in Manipur. The Thadou tribe has been one of the most affected groups. Many have suffered due to mistaken identity during the conflict. The convention expressed empathy for the survivors and their families.

Solidarity with Myanmar

The Thadou Convention also extended solidarity to the Thadou people in Myanmar. They expressed concern over the ongoing political unrest affecting their kin across the border. This reflects a broader sense of community among the Thadou people, regardless of national boundaries.

The convention called for the removal of the Any Kuki Tribe designation from the Scheduled Tribe list in Manipur. They argue that this classification was created for political reasons in 2003. The Thadou believe that removing this designation is crucial for justice and future stability.

Denouncement of Misrepresentation

The gathering condemned any organisations that use the term Thadou-Kuki. They assert that such terms misrepresent the Thadou community. The Thadou Convention declared that these organisations do not have the authority to represent their interests.

The Thadou Convention concluded with a strong reaffirmation of their identity. They reiterated their commitment to maintaining their distinct culture and heritage. The event served as a platform for voicing their concerns and aspirations as a unique ethnic group within Manipur.
