Targets under the Street Lighting National Programme likely to be missed

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power and Renewable Energy, R K Singh has stated in Lok Sabha that the targets set under the Street Lighting National Programme are most likely to be missed.

Street Lighting National Programme

The Street Lighting National Programme was launched on 5th January 2015. The programme aims to replace 3.5 crore conventional street lights with energy efficient LED lights. This replacement is expected to result in an annual energy saving of 900 crore units and a financial saving of Rs 5,500 crore. Energy Efficiency Services Limited is the implementing agency for the programme.

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), founded in 2009, is a joint venture of four national Public-Sector Undertakings NTPC Limited, Power Finance Corporation Limited, Rural Electrification Corporation Limited and POWERGRID Corporation of India Limited. EESL is leading the market-related activities of the National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE), one of the eight national missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change.

Implementation of Street Lighting National Programme

The Energy Efficiency Services Limited has installed over 76.77 lakh LED street lights against the target set to install 1.34 crore set by March 2019. The Street Lighting National Programme has not been implemented so far in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Meghalaya and Union Territories of Daman & Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Lakshadweep.
