Target Olympic Podium Scheme to be launched for Junior Athletes
The Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijju has launched the Target Olympic Podium Scheme for junior atheletes. The scheme will groom them for the Olympics that is to be held in 2024 and 2028.
What is the plan?
The GoI is to identify 10 to 12 year old talents through the scheme and will train them for the Olympics-2024 and Olympics-2018. The 2024 Olympics is to be held in Paris and 2028 Olympics is to be held in Los Angeles.
Target Olympics Podium Scheme
The scheme was launched in 2014 under the ambit of National Sports Development Fund (NSDF). It aims to identify and prepare potential medal prospects for Paralympic and Olympic games.
There are 9 sports categories included under the scheme. They are Athletics, Hockey, Badminton, Shooting, weightlifting, archery, wrestling, tennis and boxing.
National Sports Development Fund
The Fund was established in 1998 under the Charitable Endowments Act, 1890 to promote games and sports in the country.
