Tamil Nadu: Housing Units built with Precast system
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 1,152 housing units situated in Perumbakkam that were built using precast system.
What are the key details of the project?
The 1,152 housing units were inaugurated in the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) resettlement site in Perumbakkam. Their construction is completed within one and a half years of its foundation stone being laid by PM Modi. The 1,152 units, each with a plinth area of 406 sft, are spread across 12 apartment blocks.
They are constructed at a cost of Rs 116.37 crore. The Union government contributed ₹63.36 Crore. The State government’s share is ₹35.62 crores. The remaining ₹17.28 crore will be the share of beneficiaries. Each beneficiary will pay ₹1.5 lakh per dwelling unit.
What are Light House Projects (LHP)?
The Perumbakkam project is part of the Light House Projects (LHP) scheme under the Global Housing Technology Challenge (GHTC) of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). There are a total of six Light House Projects, including the Perumbakkam project in Tamil Nadu. The other five projects are being implemented in Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Tripura. Among all the six projects Perumbakkam project in Tamil Nadu has the highest number of housing units.
What is the Precast system?
In the Precast system, structures like columns, beams, slabs, etc are manufactured in the factory and brought to the construction site. The advantages of this technology include low cost and less construction time.
TNUHDB constructed 960 tenements (10 blocks) using the precast system in Chennai for Rs 112.80 crore in 2017. Also, Concrete made with industrial waste is used extensively in the Perumbakkam project, which shows the importance given to the solid waste management.
