“Swachh Survekshan 2021” launched
On July 3, 2020, the Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched the Swachh Survekshan 2021. This is the sixth edition of the annual cleanliness survey. The survey is to focus on waste water treatment this year. It will also provide state ranking. The rankings are to be provided to the states based on their support to local bodies and fund utilization.
About the 2021 Survey
The survey will categorize cities based on six indicators. They are as follows
- Processing Capacity against wet waste generated
- Segregation of waste into dry, wet and hazardous categories
- Processing and Recycling of wet and dry waste
- Construction and Demolition of waste processing
- Percentage of waste going to landfills
- Sanitation Status of cities
A new category of award is being introduced this year as a part of “Swachh Survekshan 2021”. The award has been titled as “Prerak Daaur Samman”.
Swachh Survekshan
The survey is taken up by Ministry of Urban Development in urban areas and by the Ministry of Drinking water and Sanitation in rural areas. The survey is conducted to assess the levels of cleanliness and also to assess implementation of Swachhta mission.
Through the survey, the Government of India receives feedback about the progress of Swachh Bharat. The survey played a major role in making India open defecation free.
