The first lunar eclipse of 2022 occurred on May 15^th. The Moon was seen in stunning red color. This is also called a Super Moon and a Blood Moon. It is a ‘total lunar eclipse.’

This lunar eclipse was not visible in India. Most of Asia could not see the lunar eclipse.

What is the reason for the red color of the Moon?

The reddish color is due to the Rayleigh scattering effect. During a lunar eclipse, the Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the moon, but since red has a longer wavelength it can still reach Moon and makes it appear red. Other light is scattered by the Earth’s atmosphere and doesn’t reach the Moon.

A total lunar eclipse is when the Moon is completely covered, as it moves into the inner part of Earth’s shadow (umbra). Whereas in a partial lunar eclipse, there is the imperfect alignment of the Moon, Sun, and Earth.

The next lunar eclipse will occur on November 8, 2022. It is also a total lunar eclipse. It will be visible in Asia, Australia, the Pacific, and the Americas. However, according to NASA, most parts of India will not be able to view it.
