SRS Data: India’s life expectancy rose to 69.7
According to data from sample registration system (SRS), India’s life expectancy at birth has reached up to 69.7 during 2015-2019. Data was released by demographic survey.
Key Findings
- India’s life expectancy at birth has reached up after 10 years. However, it is still below the global average of 72.6.
- Data suggests that, high under-five mortality and infant mortality could be one of the reasons that, India finds it difficult to increase life expectancy at birth.
- Gap between life expectancy at birth and life expectancy at one year or five year is largest in states like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, where there is highest infant mortality rate (IMR).
- Madhya Pradesh has the highest IMR of 43.
- Uttar Pradesh has second highest IMR of 38, and the life expectancy on completion of first year, increased the highest by 3.4 years.
- Gaps between life expectancy at birth and at year one can also be witnessed in states like Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Assam, Gujarat, and Odisha.
Life expectancy at birth
- Life expectancy at birth in India has increased by 20 years, from 49.7 in 1970-75 to 69.7 in 2015-2019.
- Among states, Odisha witnessed the highest increase from 45.7 to 69.8.
- Odisha is followed by Tamil Nadu (increased from 49.6 to 72.6).
- Uttar Pradesh, had the lowest life expectancy at birth of 43 years in 1970-75 which has increased to 65.6 in 2015-2019. It is ranked as stated with second lowest life expectancy, after Chhattisgarh with life expectancy of 65.3.
Rural and Urban Divide
- There is considerable divide in life expectancy at birth across Urban and Rural areas as well as across states.
- Urban women from Himachal Pradesh had highest life expectancy at birth of 82.3 years.
- Rural men of Chhattisgarh had the lowest life expectancy at birth, just 62.8 years.
- There of a gap of 8 years in life expectancy between rural and urban areas of Assam. It is followed by Himachal Pradesh with a gap of five-years.
- Kerala is the only state where rural life expectancy at birth is higher as compared to urban for both women and men.
- Bihar and Jharkhand are the only states where male life expectancy is higher than women in both urban and rural areas.
