Sri Lanka hosts biennial Commonwealth Law Ministers’ Conference
The biennial Commonwealth Law Ministers’ Conference is being held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 4-7 November 2019. India will be represented at the conference by Union Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad.
About Commonwealth Law Ministers’ Conference 2019
Theme for 2019 CLM Conference is- ‘Equal Access to Justice and the Rule of Law’.
Law Ministers and Attorney Generals from Commonwealth countries will be participating in the four-day conference. The conference will be chaired by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Justice and Prison Reforms, Thalatha Atukorala.
Objective: The Conference seeks to address challenges faced by millions of people seeking to resolve legal disputes.
Significance:
Since the access to justice is fundamental for democracy and peace to flourish, thus the Commonwealth countries are working actively through mutual support and encouragement to address barriers that may remain, particularly for vulnerable groups.
Such event is more significant in the current global context in which obstacles to justice are prevalent in many forms which includes barriers like lack of legal aid, poverty, corruption and distrust of justice system.
