Spinal Muscular Atrophy or SMA is a rare and deadly genetic disease that causes paralysis, muscle weakness and gradual loss of movement. It is a neurological condition and a type of motor neuron disease. It is the leading genetic cause of death among babies and young children. Recently, the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) approved the world’s costliest drug – Zolgensma – used for treating SMA. This drug is worth Rs.18 crore per dose.
