SONIC project

SONIC (Schirmacher Oasis Nippon India Coring) project is a collaborative research project launched in 2019 by India and Japan. The project seeks to understand the impact of climate change on ice sheet dynamics in the Antarctica. Schirmacher Oasis, located in Eastern Antarctica, is an example of a polar desert. It is an Antarctic oasis i.e. an area that is ice and snow free in the ice covered Antarctica.
