Smart Cities Mission – Update on Progress

The Smart Cities Mission was launched in 2015 to provide clean mobility, air, public safety, etc. The latest update on Smart Cities Mission released by GoI says that 22 cities will complete their missions by March 2023. Agra, Chennai, Pune, Varanasi, and Ahmedabad are some of them. The other cities are Madurai, Thanjavur, Trichy, Amaravati, Kakinada, Vizag, Surat, Ranchi, Erode, Udaipur, etc.

Funds

So far the GoI allocated Rs 36,447 crores for the mission. Of this Rs 32, 095 crores have been utilized. In further stages, Rs 48,000 crores will be allocated. On average, a city receives Rs 100 crores per year in this mission.

COVID Initiatives implemented under the mission

GPS tracking of workers associated with health care, CCTV surveillance, GIS mapping of COVID infections, tele-counselling and tele-medicines, ambulance tracking, etc.

Other areas

The mission works in 24 areas. Of these 10 are directly and indirectly related to water. They are smart metres, water quality monitoring, leakage identification, etc.
