Smart Cities Mission: Madurai heritage pathway

The Madurai Corporation is to map major attractions for enabling tourism to the city. Under the Smart Cities Mission, the city is to develop a heritage pathway connecting 12 different heritage sites and culturally important monuments. The project is to be implemented at the cost of 11.4 crore INR. The monuments are all located around the iconic Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple. Oftentimes, the tourists often miss or go unaware about these monuments while focusing only on this iconic temple. Hence the heritage path, which will span 2.75km, will improve the tourism to these sites also. The path is to be developed with paver block stones and will also have pedestrian pathways on either sides. After paving the path, the administration will ply battery operated vehicles along this route. Information kiosks and signage will remove the need for guides. Some of the featured monuments include the Vilakkuthoon, Fort Wall, Vittavasal, etc.
