Singapore Shangri-La Dialogue

The 19th Shangri-La Dialogue was hosted in Singapore, from June 10 to June 12, 2022, in Singapore after two-years.

Highlights

  • Asia’s premier security summit was discontinued due to covid-19 pandemic.
  • It is hosted by International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).
  • About 500 delegates from more than 40 countries took part in the summit.

Keynote Address

Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, presented the opening keynote address on June 10, 2022. During the address, he outlined Japan’s vision for regional security. He is the first Prime Minister of Japan to speak at this summit, since 2014.

About Shangri-La Dialogue

  • It is Asia’s premier defence summit, in which ministers’ debate on pressing security challenges in the region and engage in important bilateral talks.
  • In the meeting, Ministers come up with fresh approaches together.
  • The Shangri-La Dialogue is officially known as Asia Security Summit.
  • It is held annually, but could not held in 2020 and 2021.
  • The dialogue is usually attended by defence ministers, military chiefs of Asia-Pacific states, and permanent heads of ministries.

When was this dialogue launched?

The Shangri-La Dialogue was launched in 2002, by IISS, in collaboration and support of government of Singapore.

Name of the forum

Name of the forum was derived from Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore. This dialogue has been held in this hotel since 2002.

Significance of the summit

Summit seeks to cultivate a sense of community among most important policymakers in defence and security community of the region. This forum has become a significant independent forum to exchange views of international security policy decision-makers.

Participating countries

Apart from the host nation, participating countries included Australia, Cambodia, Brunei, Chile, France, Canada, China, India, Germany, Japan, Indonesia, Laos, South Korea, Myanmar, Mongolia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sweden, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, Thailand, Vietnam, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States.
