Simon Taufel to be first umpire to deliver Cowdrey Lecture
Retired umpire Simon Taufel of Australia will become the first umpire to deliver the esteemed MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture.
The lecture was introduced in 2001 in remembrance to former Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) president Colin Cowdrey, who played a major role in the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ being enshrined in the preamble of the Code of the Laws of Cricket in 2000.
Taufel, who was the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Umpire of the year b/w 2004 and 2008, will become the third non-player to deliver the lecture.
The first one was late British cricket journalist Christopher Martin-Jenkins was the first non-player who gave the lecture 6 years ago, followed by former Anglican bishop Desmond Tutu who received the honor in 2008.
