Significance of India’s USD 2.5 million contribution to UNRWA

On July 22, 2022, India made the contribution of USD 2.5 million towards the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), for Palestine Refugees in Near East. Signing ceremony as held on July 22, at the headquarter of UNRWA in East Jerusalem.

India at UNRWA

India is a dedicated donor to UNRWA. Since 2018, it has contributed USD 20 million to support the UNRWA core services to Palestine refugees in Middle East.

About UNRWA:

The UNRWA was set up in 1949, as a humanitarian agency. It is completely funded via voluntary contributions and grants from donor nations. It was set and mandated to provide protection and assistance to around 5.6 million Palestinian refugees, in the Gaza Strip, West Bank, and across refugee camps of Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Under its services, UNRWA provides education, relied materials, infrastructure, health care, microfinance, camp improvement and protection. recently, UNRWA had announced that it requires 1.6 billion US dollars from international community in 2022, for covering the expenses and provide services & humanitarian development programs to Palestinian refugees.

Palestinian refugees:

They are the citizens of Mandatory Palestine, who were expelled or fled from their country during 1947–49 Palestine war. This event is known as 1948 Palestinian exodus. They mostly live across Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, Jordan, Gaza Strip, Syria, and West Bank.
