Short Note: Over-The-Top Content
What is Over-the-top content? Which Channels are using it in India? What are Prasar Bharti plans on same?
The content i.e. video, audio or any other media which can be access via internet anytime without anyone controlling and distributing the content {via various applications} is known as Over-the-top (OTT) content. It is different from the content which is available through cable operators or any satellite operated company which directs the content to our television sets. The major advantage of OTT content is that it can be accessed anytime and on the go.
In India private broadcaster Star India has its own OTT platform called Hotstar, Viacom18 has Voot. Looking at the advantages of OTT and to make content more accessible, Public broadcaster Prasar Bharti which runs Doordarshan is planning to launch its own OTT platform. As there is on channel DD Kisan which is very helpful for the farmers and instead of viewers watching linear content, the channel can be transformed into digital platform such as an on demand app that will enable farmers to watch the content on the go and will also make them access specific crop related information through the app. Prasar Bharti is also planning to introduce an English news channel and it which will be available through OTT also through the on demand app.
