Short Note : Lift Irrigation Schemes

The method of irrigation in which water is transported by pumps and pipelines instead of natural flow is known as Lift irrigation. This method of irrigation allows farmers to benefit from the available water supply in natural sources of water which are located below the height of their farms.

The main advantage of this form of irrigation is that both the water and the manpower losses are low.

Why is it in the news?

A lift irrigation project in Nagarjunasagar has been proposed by an MP of Andhra Pradesh to the Ministry of Jal Shakti in the Lok Sabha. This project will have to be cleared by the forest department.

Other projects in India

The Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project is aimed to make Telangana drought proof by harnessing the flood waters of the Godavari. The project is an under-construction multi-purpose irrigation project on the Godavari River in Kaleshwaram, Bhoopalpally, Telangana.

Polavaram Project is an under construction multi-purpose National water project on the Godavari River in the West Godavari District and East Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh which has been accorded national project status by the Union Government of India.
