Shilp Samagam Mela 2024
The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment launched the ‘Shilp Samagam Mela 2024’ at Dilli Haat, New Delhi. This event aims to showcase and promote traditional handicrafts from various states in India. It is organized by three key corporations under the Ministry: NSFDC, NBCDFC, and NSKFDC.
Inauguration and Key Figures
Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar inaugurated the Mela. He was joined by Minister of State B.L. Verma and other senior officials. Their presence marks the government’s commitment to supporting artisans and promoting cultural heritage.
The TULIP Initiative
During the event, Dr. Kumar launched the ‘TULIP’ programme. This stands for Traditional Artisans’ Upliftment Livelihood Programme. TULIP aims to empower marginalised artisans. It provides them with an online platform for global exposure and sales of their products. The initiative primarily targets artisans from Scheduled Castes (SC), Other Backward Classes (OBC), sanitation workers, and persons with disabilities.
Dr. Kumar emphasised the importance of digital initiatives. He mentioned the ‘PM-SURAKSHA Portal’ and ‘PM-DAKSH Portal’. These platforms enable targeted groups to access subsidised loans and skill development training online. Such initiatives are crucial for economic empowerment.
Financial Support Programs
The Ministry has launched various schemes like ‘Vishwas Yojana’ and ‘Namaste Yojana’. These programs provide financial assistance and protection to SC, OBC, and sanitation worker communities. They aim to integrate these groups into the mainstream economy.
The TULIP Digital Platform will create an e-marketplace for artisans. This platform allows them to market their products directly to consumers. It encourages economic self-reliance and enhances global exposure for artisans.
Marketing Opportunities Created
Minister of State B.L. Verma reported that over one lakh individuals have benefited from marketing opportunities created by the Ministry. Events like the Shilp Samagam Mela will continue to support artisans in the future.
Rang Paridhan Programme
The ‘Rang Paridhan’ programme was also showcased during the inauguration. This initiative features uniforms made from artisan products. It honours the skills and cultural diversity of artisans. The Ministry’s corporations will use these uniforms for their personnel, reflecting India’s rich cultural heritage.
Impact of Financial Assistance
Approximately 5.6 million people and their families have benefited from loan assistance provided by the Ministry. Additionally, 614,000 young individuals have received skill training. These efforts are vital for empowering targeted groups economically.
The Shilp Samagam Mela will run from November 5 to 15, 2024. It features 105 stalls showcasing traditional handicrafts from 16 states. Products include metal crafts, wooden artifacts, cane and bamboo items, pottery, handloom goods, jewellery, leather products, and textiles.
Each evening, the Mela will host colourful cultural programs. These performances will celebrate India’s diverse heritage and promote traditional art forms.
