Seasoned Envoys appointed to India’s Kabul and Dhaka missions
On July 12, 2020, PM Modi appointed two seasoned envoys to Bangladesh and Afghanistan
Bangladesh
Vikram Doraiswami, a 1992 batch IFS (Indian Foreign Service) officer has been appointed as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh. The officer had earlier handled ties with Myanmar and Bangladesh as additional secretary. He had handled SAARC related issues in the past.
The new appointment comes as China is trying to make frantic efforts to create inroads in Bangladesh (one of India’s critical neighbour).
India-Bangladesh have acquired new dimension in sectors of power, trade and defence, connectivity.
Afghanistan
Rudendra Tandron has been appointed to India’s Kabul mission. The new appointment comes as Taliban is trying to get back into power.
Mr Tandron, a 1994 IFS officer has played major role in Afghanistan-Pakistan related issues.
India-Bangladesh
The Indian Railways recently loaded a special parcel train to Bangladesh for the first time. The train was loaded with dry chillies.
The Chillies were from Andhra Pradesh. AP is a well known cultivation area for chillies. Earlier, the chillies were sent to Bangladesh by road. The total cost of carrying the chillies through train was Rs 4,608 which is very cheap as compared to road transport.
