Sea Snot

Sea Snot is mucus-like organic substance found in the sea.  It is produced by phytoplankton when they are under stress, which is caused due to prolonged warm temperature and calm weather in waters with high nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous. While this substance itself is not dangerous, it can attract viruses and bacteria like E-coli and can become a blanket that suffocates marine life living under the sea. Researchers warn that this phenomenon is to frequent more because of the rising global temperatures.

This year, the Sea of Marmara has recorded its largest extent of Sea Snot. This is threatening the region’s corals and the breeding grounds of fishes.
