Scrapping of MP, DM quota in KV schools
Quotas in several categories including that of District Magistrate (DM) and Member of Parliament (MP) have been scrapped by the Education ministry for admissions to Kendriya Vidyalayas.
Overview:
- This has been done with the objective of improving the quality of education and streamlining admissions in Kendriya Vidyalas.
- Recently, a review was carried out by the Education Minister to check the functioning of the KVS.
- In the review it was found that these quotas are crowding the classrooms which are adversely affecting the quality of teaching-learning and the Pupil-Teacher ratio.
- The discretionary quotas had also distorted the ST/SC/OBC reservations in the KVs.
- Even in 2021-22, the ministry of education did not recommend admission under this quota.
- MPs could recommend up to ten cases for admission and this has also been discontinued.
- Earlier, there were provisions of 1000s of admissions under the quotas of Chairpersons of the Vidyala Management Committees, i.e. District Collectors, and sponsoring agencies have now been discontinued,
Effects of the discontinuation
Due to this discontinuation in the country, 40,000 seats in KVs will free up. The admission provision under quota will still be continued for some categories including orphaned kids, single girl children, etc.
Still continued provision of admission
The provision of admissions under a quota system will be for those orphaned due to COVID-19 under PM CARES Children scheme. single girl child, wards of Kashmiri migrants, intelligence agencies, paramilitary forces, etc. Also, children of serving KV employees, meritorious children in sports, fine arts, recipients of bravery awards, etc. will be provided admission under the discretionary quota.
