SC dismisses Sangma’s petition against Pranab's election as President

The apex court dismissed a petition filed by former Lok Sabha Speaker P.A. Sangma challenging the election of senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee as President. Chief Justice Altmas Kabir held that Sangma’s petition was not maintainable for regular hearing.

What was the issue?

Sangma had alleged that Mukherjee was holding an office of profit as the Chairman of the Indian Statistical Institute when he filed his nomination papers. This could make him ineligible to contest for the post of President. But the plea before the Supreme Court was dismissed by a majority of 3-2.
