Salmonellosis
The Salmonellosis is an infection caused by the Salmonella bacteria. It is a food borne disease, that is, the bacteria enter the human body through the ingestion of food.
About Salmonellosis
The disease occurs 12 to 36 hours after exposure to the bacteria. The disease leads to dehydration. Old, young and people with weak immunity are prone to the disease. Some specific type of Salmonella results in typhoid and paratyphoid fever. The disease also spreads through dogs, cats and reptiles. It is diagnosed by stool test or blood test. The best way to prevent the disease is proper hand washing, cooking food to appropriate temperature.
About Salmonella
There are two species of Salmonella namely Salmonella enterica and Salmonella bongori. Both non-vegetarians and vegetarians are prone to the bacteria. The disease occurs due to consumption of contaminated milk and meat. Also, the bacteria spreads through water and eggs. The bacteria also spread through food that come in contact with manure.
Severity of the disease
The disease is the second most food borne disease in Europe. It kills around one lakh people globally every year.
Vaccine
The antibodies against the bacteria were first found in Malawi children. Children up to two years of age develop antibodies against the bacteria naturally.
