The Sachet mobile application, launched by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), aims to improve disaster preparedness in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned it recently during his ‘Mann ki Baat’ address.

What is the Sachet App?

The Sachet app is designed to deliver real-time geo-tagged alerts about various disasters.
It operates on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), ensuring timely notifications based on users’ locations.
Citizens can subscribe to alerts for specific states or districts, enhancing localised awareness.
The app covers disasters such as floods, cyclones, landslides, tsunamis, forest fires, and more.

Features of the Sachet App

The app provides daily weather updates and forecasts from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Users receive critical information from authorised government sources. The app also includes essential resources such as Dos and Don’ts for disaster management and helpline numbers. One notable feature is its satellite connectivity, which ensures communication during extreme emergencies when traditional networks may fail.

Multi-Language Support

To cater to India’s diverse population, the Sachet app supports 12 Indian languages. This feature includes translation and read-out options, making it accessible to a wider audience. The app is available for download on both Android and iOS platforms, promoting inclusivity in disaster preparedness.

International Humanitarian Aid – Operation Brahma

In addition to discussing the Sachet app, Prime Minister Modi brought into light India’s humanitarian efforts in response to the recent earthquake in Myanmar. Operation Brahma was initiated to provide rescue and relief support. Indian teams established field hospitals, assessed damage, and supplied essential items such as blankets, tents, and medicines. This operation puts stress on India’s commitment to international aid and disaster response.

Prime Minister Modi stressed that individual alertness is crucial in dealing with natural disasters. The Sachet app serves as a tool to enhance this alertness.
