Rs 207 crore project for protection of Majuli island announced

The government has sanctioned Rs 207 crore for the protection and development of the Majuli Island located along the Brahmaputra River in Assam. The amount is proposed to be spent to safeguard the land loss due to erosion and to protect the 80km length of the bank line situated on the right side of the river Brahmaputra along Majuli Island. The state government already has plans to promote the riverine island as a spiritual, cultural and heritage centre in the world stage.

Majuli is a 400 square kilometres fluvial riverine island formed by the Brahmaputra river system. It is India’s first island district. It is the world’s largest mid-river delta (island) system and covers an area of around 340 miles. The Guinness World Records has officially designated Assam’s Majuli as the largest river island in the world. Majuli River Island is one of the prime tourist destinations of North East.
