Justice Rohini Commission
On June 24, 2020, the Union Cabinet under PM Modi approved extension of Justice Rohini Commission to examine the issue of sub categorization of OBCs. The commission has been extended till October 31, 2021.
Highlights
The commission is to look into the anomalies arising from spelling of caste names. The communities that are currently listed as OBCs and are not able to get major benefit under the reservation scheme are to benefit upon implementation of recommendation of the commission.
The expenditure towards the establishment of the commission and its administration costs are to be borne by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Current Scenario
The Commission is of the view that it requires more time to submit its report. This is mainly to clear the repetitions, inconsistencies, ambiguities and errors of spelling on the transcription appearing in the Central List of OBC.
Article 340
The commission was set up in 2017 under Article 340. The article 340 states that the President of India shall appoint a commission under a person that he thinks is fit to investigate conditions of educationally and socially backward class.
Need for sub categorization
The sub categorization will ensure those communities that are more backward among the OBC communities can access the benefits of reservation in educational institutions and government jobs.
