Roch Marc Christian Kabore elected as president of Burkina Faso

Roch Marc Christian Kabore has been elected as President of Burkina Faso.
In the presidential election, Kabore from the Movement of People for Progress party won 53.5 per cent of the vote across 368 communes. His nearest competitor Zephirin Diabre, a former economy and finance minister secured 29.65 per cent votes.
He is the second civilian to become President since the West African country became independent in 1960 from France.
Prior to entering politics Kabore was banker and had worked for the International Bank of Burkina (BIB). He had served as Prime Minister of Burkina Faso from 1994 to 1996 and also was President of the National Assembly of Burkina Faso from 2002 to 2012.
Mr. Kabore will now replace the transitional government which was established after Blaise Compaore, country’s longtime President was overthrown in a popular uprising in October 2014 followed by an army-engineered coup.
The coup was against Compaore’s attempts to change the country’s Constitution to prolong his time in office after he had already ruled the country for 27 years.
