The Union Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways has published its annual report ‘Road accidents in India 2021’.
What is ‘Road accidents in India 2021’?
The ‘Road accidents in India 2021’ provides information about various facets of road accidents that happened across India in 2021. The report is based on the information or data received from police departments of the states and union territories. The information and data are collected as per the standards set by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) under the Asia Pacific Road Accident Data (APRAD) base project. The report consists of 10 sections and it covers information related to road accidents in the context of road length and vehicular population.
This annual publication provides in-depth analysis and an overview of road accidents in India. It provides comprehensive insights about road accidents happening within the country to assist in creating awareness, formulating suitable policies, and making informed decisions to improve road safety.
The road safety measures can be successful only with the active cooperation and participation of all concerned stakeholders. The report’s comprehensive data analysis can help administrators, policymakers, civil societies, academia and private entities to come together to achieve reduced number of road accidents and fatalities.
What are the key findings of the report?
- In 2021, there were 4,12,432 incidents of road accidents. These incidents have caused nearly 1.54 lakh deaths and injured over 3.84 lakh individuals.
- In 2020, India witnessed an unprecedented decline in the number of road accidents, fatalities and injuries. The decline is attributed to the pandemic-led lockdowns and containment measures.
- Major indicators related to road accidents have performed well in 2021 when compared with 2019. These indicators are:
- Road accidents declined by 8.1 percent
- Number of injuries fell by 14.8 percent
- However, the number of fatalities caused by road accidents has increased by 1.9 percent in 2021, when compared to the same period in 2019.
