Right to Truth Day

On 24th March annually, the International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims is observed.

Overview:

  • This day is observed to pay tribute to Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero.
  • He actively took part in denouncing human rights violations of El Salvador’s most vulnerable individuals.
  • Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero was murdered on this day in 1980 after he denounced human rights violations against vulnerable populations.
  • He also defended the principles of promoting human dignity, protecting lives, and opposition to violence.
  • The United Nations General Assembly in 2010 proclaimed that the International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims will be observed annually on24th March.
  • The UN states that all countries should look to guarantee human rights and protect the vulnerable. Effective investigations should also be conducted to guarantee reparations to the exploited.

The objective of this day

This day looks to honour the memory of all the victims of systematic human rights violations. This day also looks to promote the right to truth and justice’s importance. It also pays tribute to all those who have devoted their lives as well as lost their lives to protect and promote human rights.
