Revised National Programme for Dairy Development 2025
The Government of India has approved the Revised National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD). This initiative aims to modernise the dairy sector with budget increase. The total funding now stands at Rs. 2790 crore for the 15th Finance Commission cycle, covering 2021-22 to 2025-26.
Key Objectives
The NPDD focuses on modernising dairy infrastructure. It aims to improve milk procurement and processing capabilities. The programme intends to enhance quality control measures. Farmers will gain better access to markets and improved pricing through value addition. This will ultimately lead to higher incomes and rural development.
Components of the NPDD
The programme consists of two main components.
- Component A focuses on essential dairy infrastructure. This includes milk chilling plants and advanced testing laboratories. It supports the creation of new village dairy cooperatives. Special attention is given to the North Eastern Region and remote areas.
- Component B, named Dairying through Cooperatives, promotes dairy development through collaboration with Japan. This component enhances production, processing, and marketing infrastructure across nine states.
Socio-Economic Impact
The NPDD has already benefited over 18.74 lakh farmers. It has created more than 30,000 jobs, both direct and indirect. The milk procurement capacity has increased by 100.95 lakh litres per day. The programme promotes the use of advanced technology for milk testing and quality control.
Technological Advancements
Over 51,777 village-level milk testing laboratories have been strengthened. Additionally, 5,123 bulk milk coolers have been installed. These coolers have a combined capacity of 123.33 lakh litres. Advanced systems for detecting adulteration have been installed in 232 dairy plants.
Future Prospects
The Revised NPDD aims to establish 10,000 new Dairy Cooperative Societies. It will also support the formation of two new Milk Producer Companies. The programme is expected to generate an additional 3.2 lakh employment opportunities. Special emphasis will be placed on benefiting women, who make up 70% of the dairy workforce.
Alignment with National Goals
The NPDD aligns with the goals of White Revolution 2.0. The initiative will enhance rural livelihoods and strengthen the dairy industry. This will benefit millions of farmers and stakeholders across the nation.
